The Best Places to Propose in New Orleans in 2026
If you are looking for a romantic proposal destination then New Orleans has got you covered. With French Quarter courtyards filled with jasmine, sprawling parks filled with moss-draped oaks, picturesque Victorian mansions behind wrought-iron gates, and live music always in the air, New Orleans has romantic ambiance covered.
Finding things to do in New Orleans is easy- you can’t walk two blocks without stumbling upon incredible food and world class music. But how do you find the best places to pop the question?
I’ve got you covered! After witnessing hundreds of successful New Orleans proposals, I know all of the best spots. Here are my top five picks for where I think you should get engaged in New Orleans in 2026.
5. Propose in New Orleans City Park
If you want a proposal location that not only stays lush and green year-round but also has that unmistakably Southern Louisiana look, you want to pop the question in New Orleans City Park. It has cute cobblestone bridges, gorgeous brass fountains, and several band-stands and gazebos to help protect you from one of our signature surprise summer storms. The Big Lake is surrounded by thousands of blooming tulips in early spring, the sweet scent of Jasmine fills the air through mid Spring to early Summer, the Botanical Gardens have a rotating cast of blooms throughout the year, and the sculpture garden has a number of peaceful, romantic spots for your proposal backdrop.
Of all the beautiful spots it has to offer, my favorite part of City Park for a romantic proposal has to be its Oak Grove. These trees are hundreds of years old with branches arcing down to the ground. If you time it just right, the sun lights up the moss in the most magical way creating a dreamlike look in your proposal photos.
Visually, you can’t go wrong with City Park. But logistically, there are a few things to consider. Be wary of low spots that flood when it rains and also be prepared for the mosquitoes to come out with a vengeance during twilight. Just like anywhere else in New Orleans, all you need is a solid plan to get the most out of City Park.
4. Propose in a French Quarter Courtyard
The French Quarter has an undeniable magic to it. Part of the magic is in just how much is hidden when out sightseeing the Vieux Carre. The houses are packed tightly together- driveways (which were most likely carriageways once upon a time) are a luxury most French Quarter homes do not have and lawns are non-existent. Hidden behind most houses are small courtyards not visible from the street. Some of these are not-so-small, weaving through the center of a block, leading to secret gates that deliver you to an entirely different street than you entered on. Getting to spend time in one of these courtyards is a very vampiric kind of situation; you can’t just wander into them without an invitation!
Perhaps that’s why I am obsessed with surprise proposals in French Quarter brick courtyards and honestly, you should be too. A private French Quarter courtyard offers an intimate setting just steps away from the 24 hour party outside. With vines growing up brick walls, delicate ironwork, archways, and babbling fountains, French Quarter courtyards are a perfect setting for a romantic proposal.
You can take a knee with nothing more than what the courtyard already brings to the table. Or you can add candles, string lights, roses, and a musician to really amp up the romantic vibes. Just make sure it isn’t haunted (unless that’s your thing… then check out the next spot on the list!).
3. Propose in a New Orleans Cemetery
Speaking of haunted proposal locations, you won’t find one more haunted than a New Orleans Cemetery. New Orleans is known for its iconic, above-ground cemeteries filled with ornate mausoleums and stone statues. You’ll often see them featured on the silver screen- so why not create your own cinematic moment inside the iron gates of a New Orleans Cemetery? You may want to visit ahead of time and ask the spirits if they’re cool with you decorating their grave… but if you’re cool chances are they will be, too.
A cemetery proposal does not scream “romance” for everyone. In fact, most people find a cemetery to be the exact opposite of a romantic location. But if your partner is someone who finds cemeteries hauntingly beautiful, then there’s no better place than New Orleans for a romantic cemetery proposal. Consider adding dark floral, black taper candles, and red rose petals to tie together the goth and classic romance vibes. Just be sure you clean everything up and take it with you when you go. Always treat a cemetery with respect whether you know the people buried there or not. The last thing you want is to have your future nuptials cursed by a spirit you ticked off during your proposal.
2. Propose in a New Orleans Mansion
One of the most romantic aspects of New Orleans is in it’s picturesque, historic architecture. Gorgeous examples of both French and Spanish influenced design can be seen throughout the city in any of it’s numerous historical districts. The most impressive examples are in the stately Mansions peppered in nearly every neighborhood. You may have seen some of these mansions in popular movies and TV shows but there are many more lining the streets of the Garden District, French Quarter, and even tucked away in unexpected places, like the Lower Ninth Ward. They often stand on expansive estates featuring gazebos, gardens, and magnolias lining the driveway through the sprawling front lawn. Visiting one of these beauties feels like stepping back in time- and there’s nothing like a sense of timelessness for building a romantic moment.
But the beauty is not the only reason to consider proposing inside a historic mansion in New Orleans. In addition to a wealth of beautiful architecture, New Orleans also sees more than its share of hot, rainy, muggy weather. If you are planning to propose in New Orleans between May and October, you may want to go for an indoor location (or risk heat exhaustion/being carried away by mosquitoes).
Plan to propose inside of an Historic New Orleans Mansion and not only will your weather concerns float away but you’ll get to pop the question inside a space so stunning it will look like you stepped into a fairytale. These Mansions are often well over 100 years old (some more than 200 years old!) and have been carefully looked after for generations. Make the space your own with your partner’s favorite flowers, candles (LED, of course, open flames are a no-no in old houses!), and a violinist playing your favorite love song. You’ll create a moment that adds to the rich history of the city you’re standing in.
1.Propose in New Orleans Jackson Square
I would be remiss if Jackson Square did not make the list. And yet again it makes its appearance in the number one spot!
While it may feel a bit cliché to propose where many others have before you, this location has been used many times for good reason. The St. Louis Cathedral is the perfect backdrop if you want your photos to scream “We got engaged in New Orleans!” There is no single backdrop in the city as iconic or unmistakably New Orleans. Plus if your partner is a fan of Christmas, the city always decks out the square for the Holidays with a big, twinkling tree and lots of red bows. You can easily hop in a horse-drawn carriage after and take a celebratory sunset ride through the French Quarter.
This isn’t where you want to go if you’re hoping for an intimate, private proposal. But if your partner’s idea of romance is a BIG and LOUD gesture, then this is definitely the spot. Make sure you have a plan in place for crowd control as this location stays busy.
No matter where you decide to propose in New Orleans, one thing is always going to be true: You only have one chance to get this right.
This is even more true when working in a city as chaotic as it is classic.
Unless you already know your way around these New Orleans, you’re going to want a local to help you navigate your romantic moment. A solid plan is always a good idea when trying to pull off a once-in-a-lifetime surprise. But in New Orleans, a city that doesn’t do anything in a predictable or relatable way, it’s not just a good idea, it’s a non-negotiable.
